The following are my responses to the reflection question for the movie "Million Dollar Baby". Maggie requested to die because she was experiencing unbearable suffering with no foreseeable prospect of improvement. Fred loved Maggie and he was deeply moved by her sufferings and his desperate wish was to do more than comfort and companion her. As a pastor, these are the steps I would take to counsel Fred. First, I would ask him to consider the moral principles in the process of making the decision as he might not be able to see the best options during his sadness. I would remind him that if he agrees to Maggie's request, he would disrespect Maggie's worth in God's eyes. If Fred confided to me his definite plan, I would advise him against giving an overdose of adrenaline to Maggie, as it would be an assisted suicide and would be against the ten commandments. In terms of disconnecting the ventilator, I would explain to Fred to let Maggie talk to the physicians to see if there were any alternatives that could be done and if there would be other options for her current situation. She should be the one making the final decision for her life. If Maggie is one of my church members, as a pastor I would counsel Maggie with her request to die as follows. I know she suffers because she loses the freedom to do the things she loves to do, and she also lacks support from family and friends.
