From the mid to late 1700’s colonists fought for their freedom from their mother country Great Britain. Before the Revolutionary War fighting began the colonies fought back through resistance which proved successful in building the American patriot cause. When it came time to fight, British forces were noticeably the stronger force, but the strong will and valiant efforts of the colonists proved the colonies were also a force to be reckoned with. The defeating of Great Britain by the colonists were aided by their home field advantage, alliance with France, and George Washington’s decisive and strategic tactics. With the help of Benjamin Franklin, France decided to ally with the patriot cause providing an extra enemy for the British and a strong ally for the Americans. France signed two treaties, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance. The signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce France created trade ties with the new nation, the United States. France also agreed in the Treaty of Alliance, with the assumption that France would declare war on Great Britain, that neither France or the United States would negotiate peace with the British without consulting the other. With France declaring war on the British, Great Britain had to focus on fighting in the colonies and also in the Caribbean against the French. Great Britain’s worries expanded even more when Spain allied with France, putting Great Britain in a global war. In addition to less stress on the colonies, France also aided the United States by providing money, troops, naval vessels, arms, ammunition, clothing, and blankets. The French troops proved a major significance during the Battle at Yorktown where Washington’s army, consisting of some French troops and the French fleet, held the British under siege. The surrender of the British at Yorktown brought about the end of the war, but without guidance from French military experts Marquis de Lafayette and Baron Friedrich von Steuben, Washington may not have been able to successfully lead his troops to victory. The additional troops, supplies, and strong alliance with France proved beneficial to the patriot cause and at the same time proved to be an extra obstacle for the
