Racial discrimination was still present even decades after the Civil War. It seemed as if a person of color or even just someone with a questionable appearance on the street could be considered dangerous. In Brent Staples’s “Just Walk on By,” the author describes his reaction to the automatic discrimination allocated to his person as a result of his status as a black male; he relays his message through his persona and emotional appeal. Brent Staples shares his experiences with racial discrimination with his audience through a persona he creates with personal anecdotes and imagery. He uses a number of personal anecdotes; however, the one that stands out the most is the one that begins the essay. When he was twenty-two, a college student, he
