In Edward’s sermon, Sinners of an Angry God, he projects his opinion to settlers on the dangers of not being with God. His objective was to persuade them by using violent literature to emphasize his opinions. First, he explains how “unconverted men” will be sent to hell to rot. Next, he explains how if you have never experienced the “light of life” you haven’t experienced God, and there is no reason you should be on this Earth. Lastly, Edward compares one who isn’t with God’s life to a spider being held over hell. All in all, Edward’s persuasive sermon’s objective was to convince the settlers to be with God.

He believes that if you are not with God, you have never truly felt the light of life, or in other words, happiness. Furthermore, he explains that there is no point in living if you aren’t happy, and the only way you can be happy is if you are with him. He further convinces the listeners that if you are with him, you are in a better state, and your heart will forever be protected by the wrath of evil. So, why live life if you aren’t happy? By this question, he assured them a happy, new life.

Last, he explains how you shouldn’t be here if you aren’t with Him. Unconverted men just sit in the house of God, hanging by a string, not knowing when God is going to cut it. He compares the life of a man whom isn’t with God to a spider. They are being held from a web, yet no one wants them here. If you are on this Earth knowing you aren’t wanted here and you could drop to the “furnace” that awaits you, then why are you here? This has the settlers questioning their existence.

Overall, Edward’s sermon’s purpose was to create a vivid imagery of hell. He hoped his message would get across to his audience by stating the horrific reality that awaits those who are without Christ. To add, settlers at the time lived for God.
