Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Gentleness, self-sacrifice, and generosity are the exclusive possession of no race or religion.” This quote exemplifies how anyone has the capability of sacrificing for others, no matter if an individual looks different from someone else. Sacrifice does not discriminate. When friends or family offer assistance for each other it shows that the priorities for loved ones come before one's own selfish needs. It creates opportunities to help people when it is needed the most. In society, praise is commended when one sacrifices for another person's social, emotional, and physical well-being. Close friends will go to any extent to help people who really matter to them. It is apparent in the novel, The Kite Runner, when Hassan, a servant, takes a horrible punishment for his dear friend Amir, the narrator and a brother figure to Hassan so that Amir would receive praise from his father who has neglected him his whole life. Friendships are a highly-regarded value for some people. In this novel, Hassan proved that he was a reliable friend that promised to “run the last kite” for Amir (Hosseini 79). This shows how people's morals can alter situations to benefit the person they are sacrificing for. However, it often ends poorly for the individual who is carrying out the sacrifice. For example, Hassan experienced rape, while Amir was worshiped when he brought the bright, blue kite home to his father (75). To others, being accepted by highly respected elders is a value that they deem higher than friendship. When people are put in unfortunate situations friends will often assist each other. This was evident in The Kite Runner when Amir persevered for Hassan’s son, Sohrab, to escape the deteriorating country of Pakistan. He made many calls and pulled a lot of strings to take Sohrab out of the orphanage he was staying at. This shows dedication towards a family-friend member and how it is important to protect them from living an otherwise horrid life. The act of sacrificing for the people close to somebody creates a special unity between them. Friends and close family members are more eager and willing to sacrifice for people they know instead of complete strangers because it displays more satisfaction to the offering. The type of sacrifice people can endure can go from coming home a half an hour early to make dinner for their family to people sacrificing their pride and suffer enormous pain to assist a family member or friend. People always hope for the best outcome when sacrificing, but in some cases ends poorly, leaving an individual feeling abandoned or in an enormous amount of pain. It depends on the values that an individual is brought up that leads a person to sacrifice something.
