During the 1800s the industrial revolution started, and so did the American systemIt can be argued that American society was sectionalism, though it was very nationalistic due to the United State’s economy, inventions, and judicial system. One of the huge reasons that America was nationalistic was because of it’s economy. To help the economy, the United States created the American System. The economy of America was mainly boosted by the creation of a second bank of the United States. After the war of 1812 the United States was in massive debt, to raise money they created the bank. A revolutionizing invention was the steam boat. Steamboats are a type of boat powered by a steam engine created around the 1850s. The reason why it was so effective was because it went against the wind and water currents. This would allow shorter travel time which would stimulate foreign and domestic trade. Sense people were able to trade with each other it would improve the economy. With an improved economy people were able to have pride in their own country causing nationalism to grow. A man made structure that would also improve nationalism was the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal is a giant man made body of water that goes through New York created around the time 1875-1825. This would also improve relationships with the North and South since they can now trade resources faster. Having both of the countries cooperate and function with each other united America. This would cause nationalism, because people are seeing their country function giving them confidence. An invention that changed how we communicate, even today was the telegraph. A telegraph was a piece of machinery that allowed communication through pulses of electricity. Now people were able to communicate with each other in merely seconds. One of the most effective ways to keep a civilization unified is communication with internal and foreign affairs. In the case McCulloch vs. Maryland, the state Maryland was trying to tax the second bank of the United States. However Maryland did not succeed do to the Federal government. Maryland was specifically targeting the second bank, with the power to tax banks outside of Maryland. Though Maryland’s actions were claimed unconstitutional. America now finally saw that one state is not powerful than the government of the United States. It showed that states could not interfere with the federal government, which would increase the supremacy of the federal government. Like in the past if a single state did not agree with the Articles of Confederation, it would disrupt the congress and government. The federal government stood up for itself showing that states could not abuse their power over the government. People saw that the government was running their country effectively, giving them confidence for the future of their country. If people can trust their government to run their country it will nationalism. Another judicial debate was the case Gibbons vs. Ogden. With the invention of the steamboat the state of New York gave a steam boat company license to travel between water of different states. It gave the government to control to regulate interstate trade. This would allow the federal government to have control over the economy.
