Seeing Boo through different eyes. When we grow older, we realize that the world is so much bigger and harder to understand, than what we thought. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a historical fiction novel by Harper Lee, Scout goes through that very realization in front of our eyes.The story is set during the 1930’s, in a small town called Maycomb. Scout, Jem and their friend Dill get into all kinds of trouble, from court cases to the mystery of their scary neighbor Boo. Part of Scouts realization about the world is how people are complex and strange and how she finds out people, including her neighbor Boo aren't all they seem. Boo Radley changes through Scout's eyes through the whole story without her even meeting him. Boo started out being something the parents told their kids about so they would behave and stay inside at night, Jem explained Boo to Dill like this."Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained—if you ate an …show more content…
When The kids are attacked by Bob Ewell, Boo saves them, as Bob almost killed them in range at their father. Here Scout is describing it to the sheriff, "Anyway, Jem hollered and I didn't hear him any more an' the next thing- Mr. Ewell was tryin' to squeeze me to death, I reckon... then somebody yanked Mr. Ewell down.”(270) Boo was unknown to everyone in town, just stories, but he had done small things for the kids before. He gave them tiny gifts throughout the story. That slowly showed Scout he was just different and misunderstood. In the end Scout was able to meet Boo after he saved their lives, seeing the mysterious neighbor that had eluded her through the whole book, also seeing that he was kind and scared, not vicious and scary.
