Shootings in schools have occurred ever since the eighteenth century. Due to the recent occurrences of shootings on school grounds, a major question has been raised. The question primarily being asked is: Should teachers be armed on school property? Teachers should not be permitted to carry and utilize weapons on school grounds, seeing that it can lead to misuse and it would influence children for future violence. If a teacher has been equipped with a weapon, such as a hand gun, there is a lofty possibility that it will be misemployed. For example,Nicole Flatow states ‘Sixth grade teacher Michelle Ferguson-Montgomery was injured Thursday morning when she accidentally fired her gun in her Utah elementary school bathroom”... “But she’s not the only teacher to accidentally fire her gun at school, just since this school year started,”(para.1). According to Huffington Post it conveys, “An assistant principal, who was armed, intervened and held the shooter at gun point until police arrived, and most probably prevented more people from being killed,”(Siebold, para.7). However, yet this being an example of where civilians were saved, this outcome is not always likely to materialize. To add, society may argue that the teachers have the right to carry a weapon. As it states in the U.S. Amendments, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed,”(“Second Amendment”). On the contrary, the interpretation of the second amendment is debatable. On one hand, an individual may presume that the right is for sole rights, while others are legalized to think it is for a group/the nation only.
