When you hear the word slut what do you think it means? How does it make you feel? Would you call your closest friends a slut as a joke and it that okay? Slut means different things to different people and that is why we asked college students what the word slut meant and the implications of that word. As a research team, we thought it would be best if we interviewed people we knew rather than strangers to get more in-depth answers on the topic. We came up with a variety questions, ranging from experiences with the word slut to slut being gendered. We decided that it would be best to split up the interviews having 4 interviews with male identified participants and 5 female identified participants. The participants seemed to have a positive outlook on the future of the word with quotes like this, “It hasn’t gotten more powerful.”(Interviewee 8; female) The participants seem to agree that the word is losing power. For an example, “the power behind it is decreasing. I feel like it’s being used a lot less, but yeah, I don’t think it's changing I don’t think like, even if it was changing in a positive way I don’t think the word slut could ever be used as a positive thing. But yeah, I definitely feel like it is deteriorating.”(Interviewee 2; male) Here we see both men and women agreeing that the power of the word in decreasing or losing power. Overall, language is fluid, but I think that this participant has a good point, “Yeah. I mean it is probably changing for the positive right now but it could always be bad again in the future. It just depends on how people use it. And who they apply it to.”(Interviewee 9; male) This implies that in order for the positive change to continue, society needs to continue to take away the power from the word slut. This could go into the idea of reclaiming the word slut and ending slut shaming in order to move
