Social responsibility is the idea that people and organizations must behave ethically with sensitivity toward social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues. Social behavior in sports is a very big topic, especially in the past few weeks, mostly in the NFL, with how the commissioner and his office have handled recent issues. One issue, that seems as though it won’t go away until it is fixed, is the nickname of the Washington Redskins, and whether or not they should change their nickname. Most people, who take the time and think about the nickname Redskin, will realize it is a racist name for Native Americans. A lot of sports teams that had a nickname that may have changed theirs in the past, but a team that is as popular as the Washington Redskins has refused to change their name. If there was a team that was called the black skins, there would be a huge controversy and the public would call the team racist. I mean if you think about it, it is classifying a group of people by their skin color, which is racist. The Washington Redskins organization and even the NFL need to look at this and realize that they have a social responsibility to not only the Native Americans in our country, but to everyone else as well because they need to show everyone else that they do not support racism. This is a social and cultural issue that the Washington Redskins and NFL are not being sensitive about and it looks poorly that after all the criticism and protesting, they have yet to
