Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells that are found in the body. They reproduce themselves replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells are type of stem cell which can turn into bone, cartilage or fat among other tissues. Dermal filler is an injection that plastic surgeons have used to reduce the wrinkles. Calcium hydroxylapatite is one of components of Dermal filler which a mineral which encourages mesenchymal stem cells to turn into bone. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an agency that provides health related services. The services include inspecting food and food-processing facilities to ensure safety, scrutinizing food and drugs, ensuring that cosmetics will not cause harm, monitoring the health of …show more content…
A woman who took a new cosmetic procedure which used her own adult stem cell to lift up the face had found small chunks of bone from her eyelid and tissue surrounding her eye. During the cosmetic procedure, the doctors extracted Mesenchymal stem cells and injected back into face so that the stem cells could rejuvenate the skin which was supposed to turn into new tissues and release the chemicals that could help heal aging cells and cells to reproduce. Also , doctors injected dermal filler, which contained calcium hydroxylapatite, to encourage Mesenchymal stem cells to turn into bone. As a result, it turned out that the unexpected interaction between Mesenchymal stem cells and Calcium hydroxylapatite caused her issue.
However, despite of this cosmetic accident, there are numerous untested stem cell treatments all over the country for the cosmetic and medical purposes. This increasing number of untested stem cell treatments halts both people who buy them and researchers who are hoping to conduct experiments for promising stem cell medicine.
