Prejudice is a learned attitude that is acquired by children onto adulthood. Therefore, prejudice is an ascribed social phenomenon. It is taught through external influences of behavior and attitudes toward an entire group of people. Racial prejudice is a type of prejudice that involves negative attitudes or behaviors towards members of an ethnic group with no prior direct knowledge or experience (Schaefer, 2013, pp. 43-45). For instance, the Yankee or Angelo population settling in New Mexico came from nearby slave-owning states. Their racial prejudice for Mexicans is associated with their preconceived dislike for people of “color” and their cultures. “Darker-skinned Mexicans reminded them of their slave-owning past” (Ethno-Racial Slides/Discussion).
