The negative perception of the brothers is due to Latino stereotypes perpetrated by Breaking Bad. The Latino culture is expressed through stereotypes and exaggerations for the sake of entertainment. One example, is the extreme lesson in in the value of family in the Latino culture, as shown when Hector holds Marco under the water (insert time). Another exaggeration is in the cold open of the episode. Rack focus is used on the hand of one of the boys holding the toy soldier (insert time). Changing the focus disorients the audience, but the yellow filter quickly aids in contextualizing the scene. The use of the yellow filter to represent Mexico throughout the series is an exaggeration that perpetrates the idea that Mexico is somehow dirtier than New Mexico. …show more content…
Santa Muerte, a pagan symbol belief representing the goddess of death, helps to spread the idea that Latinos are violent. The first time the shrine is shown is in the cold open of season three episode one, “No Más”, as the twins are shown savagely crawling towards it. At the end of the cold open in “One Minute” the shrine of Santa Muerte makes an appearance again as the twins light a candle. Additionally, another example of a depiction of extreme violence is in “One Minute” the brothers seem excessively violent and irrational as they carry an axe, while Hank shows a humbler, scared side. Hank was not this meek earlier in the episode. Hank beats Jesse as retribution for the phone call he received stating Marie was in the hospital (insert time). This act was done for the sake of his family, not unlike the motives of the Salamanca brothers. The perception of both characters whom have both recently committed violent acts are different.
