During the train ride to Buchenwald, German laborers would throw pieces of bread into the wagons. In the other wagon, Eliezer described the scene as, “Beasts of prey unleashed, animal hate in their eyes.” I think Eliezer is trying to say that all humanity was lost and they turned into animals. When bread was thrown into the wagons it was survival of the fittest. When a piece of bread fell in the wagon that Eliezer was in he decided not to move because he couldn’t fight off the dozens of violent men.
