Summary: Should Congress Term Limits

Currently congress has no term limits, this creates a high likelihood of corruption and financially self-centered deals with lobbyists that are benefit congress but are not always in the American people’s best interests. I would ask that that senators are limited to two terms witch would be 12 years total, and that representatives be limited to three terms which would be 6 year total. I feel these term limits would be long enough for congress to do their job effectively while also earning experience for any kind of advancement in their field, yet still short enough to keep any major corruption or financially beneficial deals with lobbyists from forming.

If we create term limits for congress, Congressmen will be more likely to take care of their constituents because once their term is over they themselves will be constituents. This means they will have to live with the laws they put in place while in office. Having the knowledge that the laws they have created will soon apply directly to them will force them to pay more attention to how certain laws will affect the general public. Since members of congress will have less time in office, they will have less time to build financially beneficial commitments

Committee appointments are normally very sought after positions because of the clout and financial support that tends to come with them. People are normally given these positions based on political favors and a person’s readiness to support certain projects. What ends up happening is the career politicians who have collected the most of these selfish relationships are more often than not, the ones who end up having the most power in congress. By setting term limits we can begin to stop this endless sequence of political payment and abuse of power. Committee assignments would be appointed based on people’s value and skills. The end result of this is a fair and educated
