2013-2014 Summer Reading Assignment

Note to parents/guardians

Below is a list of suggested reading titles for the summer reading assignment. Red Bank Regional High School is implementing a new format for the summer reading assignment for the upcoming school year. Students will have the option of reading any book from suggested list below or students can also choose a book of their choice. There will be a written assignment that is required of the students that will be turned in on the first day of school. We are including on the suggested list the lexicon level of the books. The Lexile framework measures text complexity based upon sentence length and word frequency. Lexile scores help determine the appropriateness of books for a student’s age or reading level. The average Lexile score range for 9th and 10th grade students is 1080-1305. For 11th and 12th graders it is 1215-1355. We have included books of lower Lexile scores on our list because of the popular nature of the books.

Lexile scores can be found at: http://www.lexile.com

*IB, AP, and Honors level classes may also have summer assignments that students will notified of and be responsible for.*
