Sherman Alexie, the author of Superman and Me, wrote about how he learned to read. He talks about what got hom into it, and how he grew from it. He talks about how much he loved reading and the knowledge from it. He talks about how he visit schools in the reservations to help the other Indian kids. He has many impactful quotes throughout the text. One of the quotes was,¨I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives.” He said this to certain types of kids that he wouldn't give up on.

He is teaching the kids in the reservation to read and write. He is sharing his love for knowledge and reading with them. He is raising the standards for Indian kids to way higher than it was. Most of the kids are eager to learn. He says,¨The Indian kids crowd around the classroom. Many are writing their own poems, short stories and novels. They have read my books. They have read many other books. They look at me with bright eyes and arrogant wonder. They are trying to save their lives.¨ this shows him that he is making a difference with his visits to the schools. It shows him that he is helping raise the standard from stupidity to something way higher. Alexie said this quote for the sullen kids who didn't care about learning,¨I throw my weight against their locked doors. The doors hold. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives.” because he wouldn't give up on them. He cared about them a lot. It was one of many that he said in the text, but this one was one of the most impactful.
