Individuals who have a tattoo should not be made to feel ashamed or be forced to hide their bodies due to the outrageous outlook society has on body image. Having a tattoo should not affect an individual’s employment opportunities. An individual’s body is their property, and they have the right to alter it as they please. Tattooed people are associated with being a negative person often thought to be rebellious, violent, or gang related. The meaning behind getting a tattoo should first be understood. The purpose of a tattoo is unique and meaningful to the individual. A person with a tattoo should not be stamped with being a negative person. Rather, the individual should be thought of as someone seeking a form of self-expression and body modification that is significant to them. In my opinion, tattoos are a sign of a person’s life and should be viewed as art; art that was created for a purpose and is a part of the individual’s journey. Once the false stigma behind people getting tattoos is cleared up, it is clear that a person should not be forced to cover up their art. A person should not be employed based on their appearance. Employment should be done so based on the person’s qualifications and personality. Society needs to lose the importance on appearance and focus more on the importance of self-expression and self-happiness. Requiring an individual to cover up their body for a job is ridiculous and has no reasoning other than to satisfy society’s ignorance. A tattooed individual is a person.
