Xeno’s standard definition is a stranger, this is because Xenos is accepting strangers into your home. First, a feast has to be given to the stranger, the second task is showering them with gifts, giving them a bath is the final step and then and only then can u ask for their name. This rule is in place so that when gods come down to earth they will get great hospitality. The characters Telemachus, Odysseus, and the cyclops, Polyphemus they all have examples of Xenos, that reveals character traits about them and add to the epic.
Telemachus is a perfect example of Xenos because he lets the suitors into his home and let them stay for a long while and she also let Penelope's husband Odysseus stay at her house before he the man is his father.The first time Xenos appeared, is when Telemachus greats the suitors “‘Welcome to our feast. When Odysseus first came to the cave he started a conversation with they cyclops “‘It was our luck to come here we stand beholden for your help, or any gifts…’”(IX, 725-726). This adds to the character, Polyphemus because he is known to be a mean cyclops that kills people, also it adds to the epic because it was a very entertaining chapter. Also Polyphemus's father Poseidon gets back at Odysseus for stabbing his son in the eye by making his journey home a lot harder. Secondly, Polyphemus violently slotted the crew of Odysseus “...he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out”(IX,747-749). This quote is describing how ruthless the cyclops is. It can also show how smart Odysseus gets out of trouble.
