The dogs are described as small because of the parents’ feelings. They feel vulnerable, unbalanced, and miserable, or maybe just altogether small, because something that should be with them is not. The author emphasizes that “the black bird” is very dead because it can’tt reunite with its parents. It’s not just sleeping or unconscious, it’s simply dead and there is no possible way it will wake up and continue to go about life with it’s parents.
