Another element of fiction exhibited by Poe in “The Cask of Amontillado” is setting. “The Cask of Amontillado” is set in 1900’s Italy, mostly in the catacombs. This adds to the story because the catacombs are a kind of dark, dreary place full of bones, which reflects the mood of the story.

A third element of fiction in “The Cask of Amontillado” is conflict. The conflict in “The Cask of Amontillado is man vs man. This type of conflict adds to the story because it wouldn’t be very interesting Montresor was seeking revenge from a banana. Because he is seeking revenge from a man, there are many different possibilities of what he could do to Fortunato.
