In Carolyn Foster Segal’s essay, “The Dog Ate My Disk and Other Tales of Woe,” the author explains that there are many excuses that students use as to why their homework is not ready to be turned in. Segal puts those reasons into several broad categories: the family, the best friend, the evils of dorm life, the evils of technology, and the totally bizarre. The author wants students to see these bizarre excuses so they know that professors have heard it all in order for them to accept responsibilities for their actions and learn from their mistakes. Segal wants to reach out to students around America so they can see how stupid most of these excuses are and learn to take responsibility and the grade for their actions.
