In the 13th century, the Ming Dynasty of China sent out enormous ships into the Indian Ocean commanded by Zheng He. These ships were much different than the ships used by the Europeans. For example, Christopher Columbus's ship was between 1/4 and 1/5 the size of Zheng He's. The design of the Zheng He’s treasure ships resulted in the expansion of control of the Ming Dynasty. The design of the ship made it possible to show off the Ming Dynasty. The ships caused "shock and awe." The sight of these enormous ships approaching must have been incredible for the people all along the Indian Ocean's.
