The effects of illegal drugs during pregnancy not only affects the mother, but the child while in utero and long after birth. The use of illegal drugs during pregnancy can lead to things as simple as low birth weight to physical and mental disabilities and to even death at birth. (Berk, E. L. & Meyers, B. A., 2016). Babies who are born to mothers who frequently use recreational drugs are more likely to live in poverty and receive less than optimal care due to the high percentage of mothers living in poverty and unable to provide financial or emotional care for their child.
