Based off of Benjamin Bailey’s Communicative Behavior and Conflict between African-American Customers and Korean Immigrant Retailers in Los Angeles, I as well had an experience where I was able to track a micro account into something larger, a macro experience.
This past summer in conversation with one of my good male friends the movement of feminism brought into discussion. I revealed that I connected with the feminism movement and identified as a feminist. I thought little of essentially outing myself as a feminist, for I believed it was something that was pretty central to my identity. He was taken aback by my statement and began lecturing me why I should not refer to myself as a feminist stating, “Equal rights are great but the word feminist is so harsh”. Upon further investigation, I discovered that he associated any feminist as being a radical feminist. He had been making fun of the movement of feminism, in its entirety, because he believed that all feminist wanted women to be above men, instead of the equality among the sexes. This movement is famous for women parading their beliefs topless down many busy streets around the world. It is also famous for many poking fun at the feminist movement stating, “I totally agree! Women should always be topless!”. This however directly goes against what these women are fighting for, and in turn makes the movement lose the legitimacy it greatly needs to get its point across. This lack of proper recognition the aligns with what these women are protesting against and the woman body is objectified and further sexualized in the everyday
