Throughout the poem, Beowulf shows the characteristics of a great warrior. In his first battle, with Grendel, Beowulf selflessly travels to Denmark to help the Danes during these tragic events. In this battle, Beowulf does not use any weapons he says, "My hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster". A great warrior should be loyal and Beowulf would rather die without attempting to kill with weapons, than to lose the respect of his king, Higlac. He defeats Grendel with great ease and without help. Beowulf exemplified courage when he had to sacrifice one of his men.
