Two sisters, Lucy and Rachel, ask Esperanza to contribute $5 for a bike. Cathy tells Esperanza not to talk to Lucy and Rachel because they smell like a broom. Esperanza does not listen to Cathy and gets $5 from her and and Nelly’s savings account. Esperanza, Lucy, and Rachel purchase the bike and they agree to take turns sharing the bike. Esperanza is now friends with Lucy and Rachel.

Esperanza does not like her new house. She dreams to have a better life.

Esperanza and Nenny go to a junk store called Gil’s Furniture Bought and Sold. The store is dark and filled with junk. Esperanza says the owner will only turn on the lights if the you purchase an item. The girls go to the junk store to look around and to pay inexpensive items. Nenny and Esperanza wood box- a music box. The music box has an old brass record with holes in it. The owner starts up the music box and starts making music sounds. Esperanza knew her and sister could not buy the music box and she had to pretend to not be impressed by music box. Nenny asks the old man how much the music box cost, but he says it is not for sale.

Esperanza meets her new neighbor, Meme Ortiz. His real name is Juan, but he goes by Meme. He and his family moved into Cathy’s old house. In the backyard is huge tree and from the tree’s branches you can see the whole neighborhood. The huge tree is the tree the neighborhood kids hold the First Annual Tarzan Jumping Contest. Meme wins, but he broke both his arms.
Meme’s family rents out part of their house, their basement, to Puerto Rican family- Louie’s family and his cousin Marin. Marin lives with Louie’s family because her mother and father live in Puerto Rico. Marin wears excessive makeup and back nylons. She babysits Louie’s little sisters, and does not go out of the house much.
