Unlike any of the other authors, Tuttle (2006) explores the causes of child labor in a historical preference in which children in Latin America work for the same reason as past areas such as Britain. The main reasons Tuttle lists are that children are available to work because families are poor and customs keep them from advancing with technological changes (p. 148). However, Tuttle states that customs and poverty do not explain why children work which is because employers have a preference on cheap labor (p. 149). Tuttle does not investigate this claim, which makes it difficult to find credibility in the belief that employers are prolonging the existence of child labor. However, Tuttle is the only researcher that separates why children work and why there is such a large amount of child laborers.
