The Patriots were those who participated in the struggle against Britain and believed the United States should be an independant nation. About 40% of the colonies’ population were Patriots, 20-30% were the opposing side, called the Loyalists, the remaining percentage tried to be as neutral as possible. Most Patriots were located in New England and Virginia. Patriots would serve in the militia here and there, returning home to work their farms, then returning to service, so Washington never had more than 20,000 troops under his command, even though, in total, hundreds of thousands of Patriots were serving overall.
