Character traits. Everybody has some; it’s just all about having the right ones. When taking a stand, good character traits are the most important thing to have. Bullies tend to choose people to pick on, such as people who don’t have confidence, generosity, and/or perseverance. First, to stand up to people you have to believe in what you say and what you do; this is called confidence. In the story of “The Noble Experiment,” Jackie Robinson was picked for the experiment, where they let a black man play in the professional baseball leagues, because he showed big signs that he had a lot of confidence. In this experiment, the player had to believe in themselves and not let any unkind words or actions affect him; this means he had to have confidence (Robinson). Also, in any situation when standing up for others, you have to believe that your response is correct even if everyone else thinks differently. An ancient proverb, is “Monkey see, Monkey do.” When other people tend to see you being confident, you might rub off on them, causing them to be confident. The story “Telling Bullies to Think Pink,” is a story about how two boys stood up for another kid and used it to prevent bullying. The teenagers stood up for a classmate when he was getting bullied for wearing a pink shirt, the next day the boys sent text messages to the whole school telling them to wear pink to tell that bully that it wasn’t okay what he did (Fratangelo.) Helping other people, naturally can make you feel better about yourself.
