Although modern literary scholars of The Odyssey have argued that Odysseus is a hero, closer examination shows that he is not a hero because he was not a loyal leader, he was a selfish man, and he was disloyal to his wife. The first reason why he was not a hero was because of how bad of a leader he was. His men on his ship did not trust everything he said, therefore being an untrustworthy leader. He was a selfish person who cared about no one but himself, and did nothing but use his crew members. Odysseus’s relationship with his men were as if he were using a worthless tool. This relationship is shown by example when his crew was eventually killed off. If he was a true hero, he would have sacrificed himself before them, knowing that
