Most would say writing a notable novel at the age of seventeen is impossible; S.E Hinton proved them all wrong by writing her first book, The Outsiders. S.E Hinton is known for creating realistic young adult literature that is based on real life events. From the start of high school, S.E Hinton knew she was different, and she proved this when writing her first books. As she got older, writing became harder, although she managed to come up with many outstanding pieces of work that contributed to changing young adult literature. As she aged she began to write more teen novels and started writing children's books. She also won numerous of awards, due to her amazing books. S.E Hinton's second book was called That Was Then,This Is Now. The book was about two foster brothers drifting apart; this book was also based on events teens could relate to. Many readers argue that this was one of her best books because she took the time to make every sentence count (S.E Hinton). This makes apparent that she was serious about changing YA for teens everywhere and she took the time to make this book show it. This is key because know the readers are getting what they want and what she wants; which is a book that everyone can relate to and want to read. Additionally with these new books she won a lot of awards. One award that she is very proud of is the “Margaret A. Edwards Award”, this award is given out to authors who help contribute to that change of YA literature. S.E Hinton was the first author to ever receive this award in 1988 (ALA). This epitomizes that she was an amazing author who wrote teen literature when no one else stepped up. This is notable because without authors like S.E Hinton, readers would not be reading anything like we have today.
