The immigrants from Europe and Asia flocked to the United States at the turn of the century because of overcrowding, unstable political situations, poor economic conditions, and religious persecution. The immigrants viewed the United States as the land of opportunity. They believed they could work their way up socially and economically. A family could usually move out of a city slum within one generation in the United States. There were lots of job opportunities in the United States compared to where the immigrants came from. Even when conditions were bad in the United States, the conditions in the United States were still better than what they left in Europe and Asia. I can see there being similarities between why people migrated to the United
