The United States jury system is a way to make the citizens to become self-governors for their community. The jury came originally came from Great Britain and it gave the colonists a way to go against what the king wanted in court. The Americans included criminal trial by jury in the US Constitution and in the Bill of Rights the right to a jury in the federal court system is guaranteed in the 5th, 6th, and 7th amendments. Juries have an important job in the federal court system, they determine whether someone is either innocent or guilty in a case and the person on trial can’t be retried because most of the time the decision made is unanimous. When the people on the jury have to make their decision they must be impartial and use the evidence given and their common sense. Though there are flaws in this, someone on the jury could be using their bias against the defendant in the form of their decision. Then there is if the jury can’t reach a unanimous the defendant can be found innocent even if they truly did the crime they were being tried for and then that person can’t be tried again for the same offense. Even though there are flaws in the system the jury system is the sacred cow of the federal court system because people don’t like to criticize it(Document
