The Ransom of the Red Chief
In the story, The Ransom of the Red Chief, the Red Chief “plays” with Bill and Sam. Soon they fear him and they want to give him back.
In the beginning, Sam and Bill kidnapped a little kid, and he called himself The Red Chief. When Bill and Sam took him to their cave, the Red Chief said he would burn Sam at sunrise. Sam was uneasy so he stayed awake, but then Bill woke up and said, “You was to be burned at sunrise, and you was afraid he’d do it, and he would to!” They were starting to fear The Red Chief, but they wouldn’t admit it to each other. While Sam was making sure the guy they took the child from was going to pay them, Bill had to keep the kid entertained. The Red Chief made Bill do whatever he wanted him to do. The Red Chief started to make Bill crazy, Bill said, “One more night of this kid will send me to a bed in Bedlam.”
