May 1804: After the Louisiana Purchase, the UNited States owned Louisiana territory, but knew nothing about it. So, Congress gave money to a group of explorers to observe the land. President Jefferson selected Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition. William Clark, a Virginian, also joined along with 50 other men. Lewis and Clark were given specific instructions. Jefferson ordered them to map the route of the Pacific ocean, and to study the area’s soil, mineral resources, animal life, and climate. He also wanted them to establish trade with Native American tribes, and learn about them.
