Perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk to Water. The first example of perseverance is when Salva was crossing the Akobo desert. Since Salva’s shoes were down to a couple threads he had to take them off and walk barefoot. This caused him to stub his toe on a rock while he was on his walk. While Salva stubbed his toe his whole toenail fell off. In addition, Salva had stepped on thorns. Even though Salva was in pain and was crying he persevered through it.
