Introduction:
Graduating high school students often have a short period of time to think about what career path they would like to have in the future. Some are pressured to follow the footsteps of their parents, some are applying for the course because it sounds easy while some are applying for the course because of the big profit that the future job can offer.
According to Vince Silva (2014) an engineering student, one of the major factors that have been affecting college students to graduate earlier is the shifting of courses of the college student, especially after the first to second year of experience of the student's studies. They tend to start college with an undecided mind about what career they would really like to have.
Based on the study of The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (2007), the assesment style does not suit the students; they do not like the lecturers or lecture styles; the way they are taught is not to their liking; the course seems poorly organized. Also, the subject is not they thought it would be like; the work is too easy/difficult; they find it boring; they are just not interested in the subject any more.
There are other reasons why students change their courses on their second semester or in their second year level. One of the reasons is when they are still in high school and take their entrance exam, it is either they failed their chosen courses or they failed to get to the quota. Then after a semester or a year they shift to their desired courses and will finish it all the way. The other reasons is their expectations to the curriculum. There are some lecturers who teaches the subject but students can not find its connection to their course, and it becomes one of the reasons for them to face difficulty towards the subject and it causes them to fail, and sometimes it gives them the reason to shift to another course which they thought suits them better. The other reasons is how the professors manages and influence their students to become the country's future and how they mold them to become a leader or a
