Have you ever been in a situation where one wrong move can ruin everything? Claire in This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp felt exactly like that. She was in a school shooting and was making many decisions that could affects her life, family, and friends. A boy named Tyler trapped students in a high school gym and Claire turned out to be on the track while it was happening. Out of all the characters in the book, Claire would be the best to talk about because her traits were very big, and important. Throughout the book Claire showed traits of being wise, strong, and brave that helped people get through the shooting. First off, Claire from the very first shot heard from the shooting was wise. In the first event, shots are heard from the track and Claire is giving orders for what people on the JROTC team should do to help. Some orders she gave were “‘The two of us’ - I point to Chris and me - ’we’ll find Jonah. If he’s not out front, we’ll run to the gas station for help.’” (Nijkamp, 40). A first occasion is when an officer is talking to her and Chris and she tries to offer several things. Some things she offers are “‘We can help. We can draw maps.’” (Nijkamp, 140). That shows she was brave because the police officer said it was too dangerous but she isn’t afraid and still tries to give offers. Another action is when Claire if talking to who brother Matt who was still in the school and was shot. She tried comforting him by explaining “‘Matt, I’m here with the police. Everything will be okay, all right?’” (Nijkamp, 208). Her saying that proves she is brave because isn’t of being scared and saying it won’t be okay, she puts on a brave voice trying to comfort her loving brother.
