In the eye opening work “Common Sense”, by Thomas Paine, Paine expresses his internal thoughts of how and why Britain is a leech to the United States. Within “Common Sense,” Paine introduces problematic Britain with ideas of how power is obtained, whether it’s violence, fear, or manipulation. Paine then proceeds to deliberately states Britain’s intentions through theoretical reasoning. He soon follows up with statements of the blossoming of America and how it’s only growing due to the fact that they escaped from Britain. Lastly, he generates a patriotic sensation by offering America a compromise in order to keep Britain’s patriarchy at bay by offering ideologies of how government should not intervene. “Common Sense” central idea proposes the thought of how man shouldn’t be dictated under one’s control, especially if the one in control is domineering and this idea is exemplified through Britain’s brutal history, which Paine describes throughout “Common Sense”, while targeting the common folks that branched off from Britain’s ruling. The key components of central idea, past events, and exclusive audiences all contributes to the effect of the pamphlet. While those specific key elements within “Common Sense” did create a strong core, the way Paine expresses his thoughts on paper proves to be the most effective. He specifically wrote in a way for everyone to understand without understating any problems.
