Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa shogun, came of age during the Warring States period (c.1467-1590). Japan had already experience a long succession of social and political change as firstly Oda Nobunaga (1534-82) succeeded in controlling almost one-third of the country before being assassinated in 1582. And secondly, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98), who succeeded Nobunaga as his most able general, built on Nobunaga’s achievements and managed to bring Japan under his control by 1590. After Hideyoshi died in 1597 with an infant son but no heir, Tokugawa Ieyasu became one of five allies, trusted to protect Hideyoshi’s sons’ fate and the Toyotomi clan’s future.
