Causes of Traffic in New York City
New York City is one of the world’s busiest and populated cities. Huge cities like this tend to have a great deal of traffic. Traffic is a hard problem to solve or restrict because it is hard for cities to expand to accommodate the millions of people who enter each day. The main causes of traffic are the increasing number of cars on the road, construction, and accidents.
Many residents of New York City choose to live without a car because they have access to numerous forms of public transportation to get around. Also, owning a car in the city can be expensive because parking is limited and rarely ever free. Instead of the residents of NYC, the issue with too many cars in the city stems from the number of commuters that enter each day. “During the day, commuters from the other boroughs and outside the city nearly double Manhattan’s population, from 1.6 million to 3.1 million” (Roberts). Since the city is filled with cars, buses, taxis, etc., accidents are bound to happen. “There were 223,141 traffic collisions in New York City between March 2014 and April 2015, almost a quarter of which resulted in an injury or death” (Traffic Accidents in New York City). When a traffic collision occurs, other drivers must find a way to maneuver around the scene without causing an even bigger accident. This results in traffic because a simple accident can end up occupying multiple lanes if emergency vehicles are required to come. If it is not an accident between two vehicles, accidents may occur with the millions of walkers and bikers throughout the city. Many people do not obey the walk signal nor do they cross at the crosswalks. If a pedestrian crosses the street when they are not supposed to, a motorist can end up hitting them if they do not react quickly enough.
