The Peace Policy advocated under the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant can be regarded as ‘a fatally flawed endeavour’. This policy did not achieve permanent peace between the Native Americans and American citizens and ironically led to conflict, including some of the worst massacres in the history of the United States. The inability of some Indian tribes to adapt to the reservation lifestyle and the use of inexperienced agents to implement the policy contribute to the idea that it was ‘fatally flawed’.
