INTRODUCTION
Virtual Memorials, in 1996, was the first online memorial site (Riechers, 2013). Since then, sites such as Legacy.com, Facebook, and others have appeared. What is the draw of online memorials? What is their history? Where is their future? An overview of materials researched includes Veale’s (2004) discussion of why memorials exist online; Legacy.com as explored by Hume and Bressers (2009) and how it was an outgrowth of newspaper obituaries; Church’s (2013), Lopes’, Maciel’s and Pereira’s (2014), and Riechers’ (2013) consideration of Facebook, its role in online memorialization, and its inherent problems; and a potential future of online memorials as reviewed by Riechers (2013).

Once the Internet premiered to the public and gained popularity, people found new ways to memorialize their loved ones. Online memorials provide their own charm because “the Internet offers the ability to memorialise in a public place where anyone can visit at any time, without imposition to others, and without interruption to themselves” (Veale, 2004). It moved memorialization from a fixed location into somewhere that can be accessed at any time and from anywhere. Veale (2004) introduced The Memorial Attribute Model to offer two hypotheses for why online memorialization is attractive. These pages can be created by, accessed by, and dedicated to anyone. They are often visited by ‘grief tourists’ who have no life connection to the deceased but feel that they have something in common with the bereaved or the deceased that they have to share publically (Riechers, 2013).
