When I first started this fieldwork rotation I had no idea what all went into handwriting. I read the first goal related to handwriting and it is talking and looking for all these percentages, horizontal alignment, letter size, letter spacing, spacing, number/letter formation etc. and felt as though I had never gone to school before because it was a whole new aspect of OT for me that I never even knew existed. However, once I studied up and asked questions about what all that means and how to grade it, I felt more comfortable and thought I was ready to tackle my first one on one handwriting session; however, I figured out quickly that I still didn’t realize how much went into handwriting. When it came to working with the students I was amazed …show more content…
This skill is very important because it plays a vital role in school skills such as math, reading, and writing as well as life skills such as reading road signs, recognizing faces, or picking things out in a busy area. A child is still able to learn how to read and write without great visual perception skills, but it does slow down the learning process and takes a lot of cognitive effort. Some of the different areas that could be looked at with visual perceptual skills are figure-ground discrimination, visual memory, visual closure etc. The next part of visual skills is functional visual skills, such as eye tracking a convergence. Someone with poor tracking and convergence skills is not going to follow their pencil with their eyes, for example if you practice writing large numbers/letters, figure eights etc. you can watch the child’s eyes and see that they are not following the path that their pencil is taking, they might stay at the starting point or they may jump ahead. Thirdly, eye-hand coordination requires the eyes to guide the movement such as tracing a line between two paths. “Children with poor hand-eye coordination may struggle to start and stop the pencil in the space given, and may miss or overshoot the lines.” (Roux, …show more content…
This is an important area for handwriting because you need to have good fine motor control for quality writing, but your fine motor control is going to come from a good base of support. It is difficult to use muscles of the hand when the body, shoulder, and arm the hand is attached to is moving around and having a hard time maintaining a position. There are several different exercises and activities you can incorporate into your session before starting handwriting to work on this skill. Secondly, you need to have good fine motor control to enable better pencil control and improve their grasp. Again, there are endless fine motor activities you can do with a child to improve this skill. Lastly, just as mentioned above the eye-hand coordination requires the eyes to guide the movement such as hitting a
