What is coastal Erosion?
Coastal erosion is a natural process that continually changes beaches and dunes when wind, water and ice take away sediments of land. Coastal erosion occurs along beaches and shorelines. As the waves constantly hit the beach, they eventually break pieces of ground and rock into sand and deposit it far away from the land.

Council
The local council has a very intensive perspective on the outlook regarding with the issues of coastal erosion. Sutherland shire council has been assisting with the development of sand dune areas around Cronulla beaches, including Wanda beach. Members of the council have put up access control fences, wooden dune paths to prevent people from walking on them, more signs to educate people and used beach nourishment on Wanda beach after the storms.

Residents
Residents who live on the coast will care about the issue of coastal erosion because it can damage their homes and possibly result in property loss. In 2009, Sutherland Shire Council gave away a survey to the residents of Wanda beach asking them on their knowledge referring to coastal erosion. Statistics revealed that only 3 out of 10 people had knowledge about coastal erosion proving that they need to be more educated as coastal erosion can damage their homes and endanger their lives.

Builders
Builders are concerned about building along the beaches and shorelines as the waves are constantly hitting the beach and taking fragments of sediments, therefore making the land less stable for building a property on it.

I’ve chosen to do this assignment on a place that I’ve visited because I’ve seen the issues with my own eyes and I want to research and find out how they will be managed, because coastal erosion is affecting everyone, so the more I know about it, the better.
Impacts on physical and human environment
Beaches are formed by an ongoing cycle of erosion and deposition of sand, so when storms erode beaches of their sand, the sand is then re-deposited by large waves. When people use beaches like Wanda Beach for recreational use, housing or tourism purposes, the cycle is being interrupted because sand on beaches is decreasing. Even though beaches make a great place for housing, tourist activities, it has caused a lot of damage to Australia’s coastal areas.
Coastal erosion has a negative effect on the human environment, especially for the houses that are built on top of cliffs. When the sea clashes into the cliffs, the cliffs slowly start to erode away, causing the houses to collapse into the sea.
