The Salem Witch Trials started from evil and envious townspeople. They were greedy and always wanted more than what they needed. These people could never be happy with what they already have. Abigail Williams wanted John Proctor and was willing to do anything to get him. Thomas Putman made his daughter lie just so he could have his neighbor's land. Reverend Parris felt disrespected by the townspeople because he didn't make as much money as he would've liked to. Salem was full of envious people that were willing to kill to get what they wanted.

Thomas Putman accused his neighbors of being witches so he could have their land. Ruth his daughter pretended to be sick and said that she saw their neighbors with the devil. This got the neighbors put in prison and caused them to forfeit their land. Thomas got what he wanted, and his neighbors got hung for his lie. Thomas had many opportunities to admit to his lies, but was determined to get the land that he's always wanted.
Reverend Parris was also one of the bad things in Salem. He believed that he should be treated like a king. The money he got wasn't enough for him and he constantly wanted something better. Just because he wasn't getting as much money as he would've liked to he felt like the townspeople were disrespecting him.
