An important theme in To Kill A Mockingbird is education. This is because learning something new helps a person learn right from wrong. Sometimes views even in school may be very narrow. For instance, Scout and Jem’s teacher, Miss Caroline, does not like her students that are poor and unclean; she always shouts at them. When the teacher does not demonstrate good values children must learn from family. Scout and Jem can learn things from their father, Atticus, such as morality. Scout and Jem can learn manners and how to be good people from their father. For example, when Scout and Jem were given rifles he said that they can shoot animals which would hurt anyone but not mockingbirds as they are innocent. The definition of nigger is referring to a “black person” but it is derogatory and very disrespectful to black people and it is used by white people to show their disrespect to black person. The white in Maycomb use this term to show how much they don’t like or respect the black people. “Do you defend niggers, Atticus?” Scout said.
Furthermore, some accents were found in the book as Southern Drawl such as “you‘ve ruined ‘em, No ma’am.” Because it emphasizes the time and place as the “Deep South” in the 1930’s and the place is not very modern or developed.

Another good literary device is the theme of racism. It is because a man, Tom Robinson, who is a black, is in trouble. Atticus is defending him, although most white people are angry with Atticus for defending a black man and some of Atticus’s relatives are not happy because he is going to help Tom Robinson. What’s more, despite the fact that many people don’t want Atticus helping a black person, Atticus knows Tom is innocent and he will go to jail as he is black.
