In society, big businesses have been exempt from their social and ethical duties, by harming natural habitats. Small fines can not stop a large company from harming the earth in order to save money. A major contributor to the environmental harm that big businesses cause is deforestation. The removal of trees and plants cause a massive decrease in wildlife population, drives climate change, and increase the speed of soil erosion. Large companies also contribute to their common stigma of failing to care about the environment by polluting the air, waters, and, illegally discarding waste. The impact companies have on wildlife and habitats are astronomical. Businesses destroy ecosystems to make room for their establishments, kill wildlife, and put …show more content…
The air is constantly being harmed by it’s people, but big businesses have shown to have one of the largest impacts on the air pollution levels. Countries like China and the United States are contributing the most to air pollution, (see appendix c) they both have massive industry sectors in their country. To compare China’s contribution to America, they both pollute the air greatly, but because China is much more populated and have more prominent industries, China’s biggest cities multiply America’s emissions by nearly ten-fold (see appendix d). Large corporations contribute to polluting the environment by having heating and air conditioning systems pump greenhouse gas emissions, building structures from materials that don’t come from renewable sources, leaving air conditioners, computers, and lights on, and consuming vast amounts of paper. Another way businesses pollute is through the waterways. An example of water pollution by big business can be seen in the Exxon Oil Spill. Industrial waste has been a leading source of oil pollution into the sea (see appendix E)Exxon was transporting oil across a Sound in Alaska when they leaked 10.9 million gallons of oil into the water. It formed a barrier layer across the water. The Exxon Company thought it was just one layer of oil and would not do much damage. …show more content…
Urbanization takes a great toll on animals and the habitat they inhibit. Big business often destroy animal’s habitats when removing trees and ponds, and replacing them with factories, stores, or deforesting those regions. By removing large portions of a natural habitat, animals lose their home, and risk extinction. In general terms, “Among the many human activities that cause habitat loss, urban development produces some of the greatest local extinction rates and frequently eliminates the large majority of native species” (Michael L. McKinney, 2002). Ecological systems that endure a large decrease in population have difficulty finding food, thus causing a decrease in biodiversity, because of the lack of species that can be hunted, original species to the ecosystem are subject to extinction. Secondly, the big industry of agriculture is a contender for being responsible as one of the largest polluting industries. Farmers often use synthetic chemicals to control pests, insects, and weeds. These synthetic chemicals are harmful to the environment, it often runs off into drains and ditches which will eventually reach major waterways. These chemicals are intended for increasing yield for the farmers, preventing spoilage and killing insects. A common organic chemical, called PCB, is in synthetic chemicals, has been
