Explain the First Crusade. Furthermore, tell how it was successful and what was it’s greatest negative?

The First Crusade (1096-99) was an attempt at recapturing the Holy Lands. It was called by Pope Urban II. The First Crusade started as a pilgrimage, (religious journey) and ended as a military expedition. The overall goal of the First Crusade was to recapture the Holy Lands that were taken in the Muslim conquests of the Levant (Also to free the Eastern Christians from Muslim rule.) When is a crusade good? Which crusade best fits this idea of a good crusade and why.

A crusade is good when it's defending the Christians. It's okay when it's just fighting back, and not necessarily being the initiator of the fight. For example, I think that the first crusade best fits the idea of a good crusade. I think this because it was simply defending the Christians and the faith from the Muslims. It could truly be seen both ways, in fact the crusades are one of the top debated and confused topics within the faith.
Good: Crusades are good when they are protecting either Christians or the faith itself. When they are simply an act of defense, then they're good.
Bad: Crusades are bad when they leave an unfortunate, maybe even embarrassing scar on the Christian faith. The second and fourth crusades did this because sacking Constantinople was obviously not the brightest idea. This leads into the whole idea of if war is justifiable or not. I think that deaths and killings are horrible; (we know that the catholic religion forbids taking another's life) however, it all goes down to if the killing is defense or what the true intentions of the killer are. For example, we have learned that the criteria for a "Just War" include that the damage inflicted by the aggressor must be lasting, grave, and certain. It also must be the last resort, and there must be serious prospects of success. Lastly the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be
